Twenty-year-old Liam Parker was on his way home from college when the accident happened.
Liam was crossing Paisley Road West in Glasgow, near the Shields Road subway station, when a van sped through a red light and hit him from behind. He was almost to the pavement when the vehicle clipped his right side, sending him sprawling across the road.
“The noise was the first thing I noticed,” Liam said. “I didn’t even see it coming. One moment I was crossing, the next I was on the ground.”
The impact knocked Liam several feet forward and tore his backpack clean off his shoulders. Shocked passers-by rushed to help while the van slowed briefly before driving away.
Liam was assessed by paramedics on the scene. While he was visibly shaken, he had no obvious life-threatening injuries and was able to speak and move around. Liam did not feel the need to go to the hospital right away, so he went home instead.
Before leaving, the crew explained the warning signs to watch for and advised him to attend A&E urgently if the pain increased, he felt dizzy, or his mobility worsened. Later that evening, the pain worsened, and he struggled to walk. His parents took him to the hospital, where scans revealed the true extent of his injuries: a fractured ankle, two cracked ribs and extensive bruising across his torso.
At the time of the accident, Liam worked part-time in a café while studying. His role involved standing for long periods, meaning he was unable to work during his recovery.
“I was off my feet for weeks,” he said. “I hated being stuck indoors and relying on everyone else. It really knocked my confidence.”
Although shaken by the experience, Liam knew he needed advice. With the driver untraceable, he feared there would be no way to recover compensation for what he had been through.
That’s when he contacted HD Claims.
When Liam first got in touch, his main worry was simple: “If the driver has disappeared, do I even have a case?” He felt frustrated and powerless.
We explained that he still had options. Even when a driver can’t be identified after a hit-and-run, people injured as pedestrians can often claim through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) — an organisation designed to support victims of uninsured or untraced drivers.
From there, we gathered the police evidence, arranged the medical information, and gathered witness details to properly show what had happened. Not just on the day, but in the weeks afterwards: the pain, the disruption to his studies, and the income he lost while he couldn’t work.
The MIB’s first offer came back at £5,500. Liam didn’t know whether that was fair, but it didn’t feel like it matched what he’d been through. After reviewing everything, HD Claims advised that the offer undervalued his injuries and the impact on his life. We challenged it and backed that up with clear supporting evidence.
A short time later, the MIB returned with a revised offer of £7,450, which Liam accepted.
Liam said:
“I didn’t think I’d get anything because the driver disappeared. HD Claims explained everything in plain English and kept me updated the whole way through. I always knew what was happening and why.”
“They handled all the stress for me so I could just focus on getting better. Without their help, I would’ve accepted the first offer and never known I deserved more.”
