Kirsty MacLeod was walking back to her car after finishing a late shift when she was hit by a van while crossing the road.
The 32-year-old had stepped onto the pedestrian crossing on Union Street in Aberdeen when a delivery van turning left failed to stop and struck her at low speed. She was knocked to the ground and slid a short distance along the wet tarmac, suffering injuries that, while not life-threatening, had a significant impact on her everyday life.
Kirsty said: “At first, I was just in shock. I remember people shouting and rushing over, and I couldn’t work out what had happened. My knee was burning, and I felt dizzy. I kept thinking, ‘Please don’t let anything be broken.’”
Police and ambulance crews attended the scene. Paramedics treated her for shock and pain before taking her to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where doctors confirmed soft tissue injuries to her neck and back, a painful sprain to her right knee, and bruising to her hip and shoulder. She was discharged with pain relief and advice to rest, but she struggled with sleep, traffic anxiety, and limited mobility in the weeks that followed.
Kirsty’s main concern was the long-term effect on her work and independence. As a care worker, she was unable to complete shifts that involved lifting and supporting patients. She also had to stop driving temporarily and gave up her usual fitness routine.
